They combine software engineering with machine learning. Most have a degree in computer science, mathematics or a related subject, often with a master's degree. They work in technology companies, research labs and many other industries. ## What does an AI engineer do? - Design, train and test machine learning models for specific tasks. - Prepare large data sets and build pipelines that feed data into models. - Build applications on top of existing AI models, for example chatbots or search tools. - Deploy models into products and make sure they run quickly and reliably. - Monitor models after launch and retrain them when data or performance changes. - Check models for errors, bias, security risks and possible misuse. - Work with data scientists, software developers and product teams to agree goals. ### Where do they work? Most AI engineers have a bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, data science, physics or electrical engineering, and many also have a master's degree in machine learning or artificial intelligence. Research roles often require a PhD. You need strong programming and software engineering skills as well as the mathematics behind machine learning. A common path is to work first as a software developer or data scientist and then specialise. Projects that show you can train, evaluate and deploy a model, or build a useful AI application, carry a lot of weight with employers. 1. **University degree.** A bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, data science or engineering, followed by a master's degree in artificial intelligence or machine learning, is the most common route. Final-year projects, research assistant work and internships in AI teams help you stand out from other graduates. 2. **PhD and research.** A PhD in machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing or a related field leads to research scientist and advanced engineering roles in universities and industry labs. It usually takes three to six years, depending on the country, and published research strengthens your applications. 3. **Switching from software or data work.** Many AI engineers start as software developers, data engineers or data scientists. They learn machine learning through online courses, internal projects and open-source tools, then move into AI teams. AI engineering is not a licensed profession, and no specific qualification is legally required. However, governments are introducing rules for AI systems. Some regions, including the European Union, now place duties on organisations that build or use AI in high-risk areas such as hiring, credit or healthcare. Data protection and copyright laws also affect how training data can be used. The rules are changing quickly and differ between countries. ## How much does an AI engineer earn? The roles overlap, and in smaller organisations one person may do both. **Do you need a PhD to become an AI engineer?** No, most AI engineering jobs do not require a PhD.
