Quick answer

Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental health problems and emotional difficulties, such as depression, anxiety, trauma and eating disorders, mainly through psychological assessment and talking therapies. The route is long: usually a psychology degree followed by a doctorate or master's in clinical psychology with supervised practice. They work in hospitals, community mental health services, schools, prisons and private practice.

## What does a clinical psychologist do?

- Assess people's mental health using interviews, observation and standard psychological tests.
- Plan treatment based on each person's needs and the best available evidence.
- Deliver talking therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, to individuals, families or groups.
- Support people with conditions such as anxiety, depression, psychosis, trauma or dementia.
- Measure progress and change the approach when treatment is not helping.
- Advise and train doctors, nurses and other staff on psychological care.
- Carry out research and evaluate mental health services.

### Where do they work?

Clinical psychologists work in hospitals, community mental health teams, children's services, prisons and forensic services, rehabilitation units and universities. In some countries most work in public health services, while in others, such as the United States, private practice is common. Some work in schools, the armed forces or charities. Hours are usually regular, with planned appointments, but the work is emotionally demanding and psychologists receive regular supervision throughout their careers.

- Psychological assessment and testing
- Evidence-based therapy skills
- Active listening and empathy
- Ethical judgement and clear boundaries
- Research methods and statistics

## How do you become a clinical psychologist?

The route is long and competitive. You first complete a degree in psychology, usually three to four years. Most countries then require postgraduate training in clinical psychology with supervised practice, such as a three-year doctorate in the UK, a doctoral programme of five or more years in the United States, or a master's followed by supervised practice in Australia and many European countries. Many applicants gain paid or voluntary experience in mental health work before they are accepted. In some countries, including the UK, graduates in other subjects can take a psychology conversion course to meet entry requirements.

1. **Psychology degree and doctorate.** The most common route in English-speaking countries is a psychology degree followed by a doctorate in clinical psychology. In the UK, doctoral training takes three years, and trainees are usually employed by the public health service. In the United States, PhD and PsyD programmes typically last five to seven years, including a year-long internship.
2. **Master's and supervised practice.** In Australia and many European countries, you complete a master's degree in clinical psychology, often followed by supervised practice or further specialist training before you can register. In some countries, including parts of Latin America, a long first degree in psychology leads to a professional licence, and clinical specialisation comes later. Check what the national regulator expects.
3. **Conversion from another degree.** If your first degree is not in psychology, you can take a conversion course or master's that gives you an accredited foundation in psychology. In the UK this usually takes one year full-time. You then still need relevant experience and a place on clinical training, so this route adds time and competition.

## Do you need a licence to work as a clinical psychologist?

Clinical psychology is a regulated profession in many countries, and titles such as "clinical psychologist" or "psychologist" are often protected by law. You usually register with a national or state regulator after approved postgraduate training and supervised practice. In the United States, each state licenses psychologists, usually requiring a doctorate, supervised hours and an exam. In some countries the profession is less regulated, so check the local rules and choose accredited training.

## Job outlook

Demand for mental health care is high in many countries, as awareness grows and stigma falls, and many people wait a long time for psychological therapy. However, training places are limited and competition is intense, so many graduates work in support roles for several years first. Counsellors and therapists with shorter training also deliver some talking therapies. Online and digital therapy is widening access and changing how services work.

## Questions about becoming a clinical psychologist

**How long does it take to become a clinical psychologist?**

It usually takes seven to twelve years from the start of university. You typically need a three- or four-year psychology degree, often a year or more of relevant work experience, and then postgraduate clinical training. This training takes about three years in the UK and five to seven years in the United States, while other countries require a master's plus supervised practice.

**What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?**

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in mental health and can prescribe medication. A clinical psychologist has trained in psychology rather than medicine and mainly uses psychological assessment and talking therapies. In most countries psychologists cannot prescribe medicines, although a few US states allow specially trained psychologists to do so. The two often work together in mental health teams.

**Can you become a clinical psychologist without a psychology degree?**

Yes, but you usually need extra study first. In several countries, graduates in other subjects can take a psychology conversion course or master's that meets the entry requirements for clinical training. In the United States, some doctoral programmes accept students from other subjects if they have completed key psychology and statistics courses. Expect this route to take longer.

**Is it hard to get onto a clinical psychology doctorate?**

Yes, in most countries. There are usually many more applicants than places, and many people apply more than once. Programmes look for strong academic results, research skills and relevant experience, such as work as an assistant psychologist, support worker or research assistant. Experience with different client groups and a clear understanding of the role can strengthen your application.
