## How do you become a marketing manager?

Marketing manager is not usually an entry-level job. Most people start as a marketing assistant, executive or coordinator after a degree in marketing, business, communications, psychology or another subject, then take on more responsibility over several years. Professional qualifications from bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing, or from national marketing associations, can help you progress. People also move into marketing from sales, journalism, design or data roles. A record of campaigns with clear, measurable results matters more to employers than any single qualification.

1. **Degree and junior marketing role.** A degree in marketing, business or communications teaches the basics of consumer behaviour, research and strategy. Graduates usually start in assistant or executive roles, and internships make it easier to get the first job. Promotion to manager typically follows a few years of good results.
2. **Move from a related field.** Sales, customer service, journalism, design and data analysis all build skills that marketing teams need. Many people move into marketing within their own organisation, starting with a specialist task such as social media or events. Short courses or a professional certificate can support the change.
3. **Master's or MBA.** A master's in marketing or an MBA can help graduates from other subjects enter the field, or speed up progress into senior roles. These programmes are most useful when combined with internships or work experience. They are expensive, so compare them with professional qualifications that you can study while working.

## Do you need a licence to work as a marketing manager?

Marketing is not a regulated profession, so you do not need a licence. However, marketing managers must follow laws and codes on advertising, consumer protection and data privacy, which differ between countries and are especially strict in the European Union. Extra rules often apply to marketing medicines, alcohol, financial products, gambling and products for children. Many countries also have advertising standards bodies that deal with complaints.

## Job outlook

Every organisation that sells products or services needs marketing, so demand is spread across the economy. However, marketing budgets are often cut quickly in a downturn. AI tools now create content, target ads and automate reports, which changes what teams need. Managers who understand data, customers, brand and ethics, and who can lead people through change, are likely to stay in demand. Competition for management roles is strong, and proven results count.

## Questions about becoming a marketing manager

**What qualifications do you need to be a marketing manager?**

Most marketing managers have a degree in marketing, business, communications or a related subject, but experience matters more than the degree title. Employers want proof that you have planned campaigns, managed budgets and delivered results. Professional qualifications from marketing institutes and a portfolio of work can help, especially if your degree is in another subject.

**How long does it take to become a marketing manager?**

It usually takes several years of experience after your first marketing job. Most people work as an assistant, executive or specialist first, learning campaign planning, analytics and budget control. Progress can be faster in small organisations or start-ups, where you take on wider responsibility early, and slower in large companies with more levels.

**What is the difference between a marketing manager and a digital marketer?**

A digital marketer usually specialises in online channels such as search, social media, email and paid ads, and spends much of the day running and analysing campaigns. A marketing manager takes a wider view: setting strategy, managing the budget and team, and coordinating all channels, including offline activity. Many marketing managers started as digital marketers.

**Is marketing a good career?**

Marketing suits people who enjoy both creative and analytical work. It offers roles in almost every industry and country, and skills transfer well between employers. The downsides are pressure to show results, frequent changes in tools and platforms, and budget cuts in difficult economic times. Continuous learning is part of the job.
