# What can you do with a business management degree?

Also called: Business administration · Business studies · Management · Management studies · Commerce

Updated September 26, 2026 [How we use data](https://coursetojob.com/methodology/)

Quick answer

A business management degree teaches how organisations are run, including strategy, marketing, finance, people management and operations. It is a broad degree, so graduates go into many roles, such as project manager, business analyst, marketing manager, human resources officer, supply chain manager and management consultant, in companies, public services and charities around the world.

## Careers with a business management degree

Because the degree is broad, graduates work in almost every sector. Many join graduate programmes in large companies or public services and move through different departments. Common directions include project management, business analysis, marketing, human resources, and supply chain and logistics management. Some become management consultants, often after gaining experience or a master's degree. Others start their own business or join a family firm. Less obvious options include sales, retail and hospitality management, fundraising for charities and operations roles in technology companies.

## How the degree differs around the world

In the UK, Australia and much of Europe, a bachelor's degree usually takes three years, and many UK programmes offer an extra placement year in a company. In the United States and Canada it is typically a four-year business administration degree, and in India and some other countries similar degrees are called business administration or commerce. Entry rarely requires specific school subjects, although some programmes ask for mathematics. Some business schools hold international accreditation, which employers may notice. In Europe it is common to take a master's in management straight after the bachelor's, while an MBA usually needs several years of work experience first.

## Is a business management degree right for you?

### It may suit you if

- You are interested in how organisations work and make decisions.
- You want a flexible degree that keeps many career options open.
- You enjoy working with people, presenting ideas and leading group projects.

### Think twice if

- You want a degree that leads to one specific profession.
- You expect the degree alone to make you stand out, as it is a very popular subject and employers also look for experience.
- You dislike group work and presentations, which are a large part of most programmes.

## Further study

Many graduates go straight into work and build experience. A specialist master's in finance, marketing, human resources, supply chain management or business analytics can help you move into a specific field. An MBA is usually taken after several years of work by people aiming for senior management. Professional qualifications in project management, human resources or accounting are common alongside a job.

## Questions about studying business management

**What jobs can you get with a business management degree?**

Common jobs include project manager, business analyst, marketing manager, human resources officer, supply chain manager and management consultant. Graduates also work in sales, operations, retail and hospitality management, procurement and account management, and many start their own businesses. Most employers value work experience, so internships and placements are important.

**Is a business management degree worth it?**

It can be, especially if you gain work experience through internships or a placement year. Because it is a popular and broad degree, results vary widely between universities and graduates. The official data on this page shows how business graduates do in the UK. A clear career goal and practical skills, such as data analysis, help you stand out.

**What is the difference between business management and business administration?**

In most cases, very little. Business administration is the usual name in the United States, Canada and many other countries, while business management and business studies are common in the UK. Both cover similar subjects, such as marketing, finance, operations and strategy. Compare the modules of each programme rather than relying on its name.

**Is a business management degree hard?**

Most students find it less technical than engineering or science degrees, but it still needs steady work. You read, write reports, analyse case studies and work in teams, and some modules, such as finance and statistics, use mathematics. The bigger challenge is often to stand out, since many other students take the same degree.
