Fashion designers create clothing, footwear and accessories, from the first idea to the finished product. They research trends, sketch designs, choose fabrics and work with pattern cutters and manufacturers. Most study fashion design at a college or university, and a strong portfolio is essential. Many work for clothing brands and retailers rather than for their own label, and the industry is highly competitive.
Most fashion designers work for clothing brands, high-street and online retailers, sportswear companies, manufacturers and design studios. A smaller number work for luxury fashion houses or in costume departments for film and theatre, or run their own labels. Well-known fashion centres include Paris, Milan, New York, London, Tokyo and Shanghai, while much production takes place in Asia and other regions. The work can involve travel to suppliers and factories, and long hours before collection deadlines.

Most fashion designers have a degree or diploma in fashion design, fashion and textiles or a related art and design subject. Courses teach drawing, pattern cutting, sewing, textiles and computer-aided design, and usually end with a graduate collection. Internships with brands or designers are very important for contacts and experience, but in some countries they are poorly paid or unpaid. Some designers first work as pattern cutters, sample machinists or design assistants and progress from there. Your portfolio, including technical and commercial work, is what employers judge most.

Fashion design is not a regulated profession, and you do not need a licence. Designers and brands must follow rules on product safety, textile labelling, children's clothing and intellectual property, which vary between countries and markets. Some regions, including the European Union, are introducing stricter rules on sustainability, textile waste and responsibility for supply chains. Industry bodies and fashion councils in some countries support designers, but membership is voluntary.

Fashion remains a large global industry, but design jobs are few compared with the number of graduates, so competition is intense. Fast production cycles, online retail and pressure on costs shape much of the work. Growing concern about sustainability is creating demand for designers who understand materials, recycling, repair and responsible supply chains. AI and 3D design tools are now used for trend research, sampling and virtual prototypes, which changes the skills employers want.
A degree or diploma is the usual route and helps with internships and first jobs, especially at larger brands. It is not legally required, and some designers progress from technical or retail roles or start their own labels. Whatever your route, you need a strong portfolio and practical skills in garment construction.
It can be rewarding if you are creative, determined and interested in both design and business. It is also very competitive, and early jobs and internships are often poorly paid. Most designers work on commercial ranges for brands and retailers rather than creating their own collections, so be realistic about the type of work available.
Yes, most do. You may not sew every garment yourself, but understanding pattern cutting, fabrics and construction helps you design clothes that can be made and fit well. Employers and course tutors expect basic sewing and technical skills, and many designers use them throughout their careers.
Most designers first gain experience working for other brands, to learn about production, suppliers and selling. Starting a label usually means creating a small collection, finding reliable manufacturers, building an online presence and managing cash flow carefully. It is financially risky, so many designers start small alongside other work.
Graphic designers create visual content that communicates ideas, such as logos, brand identities, packaging, posters, publications, websites and social media graphics.
Interior designers plan the inside of homes, offices, shops, hotels, hospitals and other buildings so that spaces are practical, safe and attractive.
Marketing managers plan and lead the work that makes people aware of a product, service or organisation and persuades them to choose it.
