What does a sports coach do?

Where do they work?

Sports coaches work for clubs, schools, universities, community programmes, leisure centres, national sports organisations, academies and professional teams, and some run their own coaching businesses. Many coaches work part time or freelance and combine several jobs, and many start as volunteers. Evening and weekend work is normal, sessions often take place outdoors in all weather, and competitions involve travel. Full-time jobs in professional sport are limited and competitive.

How do you become a sports coach?

Most coaches start by taking the entry-level coaching courses offered by their sport's national governing body, then progress to higher levels that require experience and assessment. Volunteering at a club or school and assisting experienced coaches is the usual way to build experience. You will also need first aid training, safeguarding or child protection training, and often a background check to work with children. A degree in sports coaching, sports science, physical education or kinesiology helps for performance, academy and university roles. Former athletes often move into coaching, but they still need coaching qualifications.

1. Governing body coaching awards. Every major sport has national and international governing bodies that offer coaching qualifications, from short introductory courses to advanced awards for elite coaches. Combining these with regular volunteering or part-time coaching is the most common route. Higher levels usually require logged coaching hours and a practical assessment.
2. Degree in sports coaching or sports science. A degree in sports coaching, sports science, physical education or kinesiology covers physiology, psychology, biomechanics and coaching methods. It is useful for performance and academy roles. If you also want to teach physical education in schools, you usually need a degree and a teaching qualification. Placements with clubs give valuable experience.
3. Former athlete or vocational route. Players and athletes often move into coaching when their competitive careers end, using their knowledge of the sport and their contacts. Some countries also offer vocational diplomas or apprenticeships in sports coaching. Whatever your background, coaching qualifications and practical experience with different groups of learners are still needed.

Do you need a licence to work as a sports coach?

Sports coaching is partly regulated. In many countries anyone can coach on a voluntary basis, but clubs, schools and leagues usually require governing body qualifications, first aid training and background checks for work with children. Some countries regulate paid coaching: France, for example, requires a state-recognised qualification to coach sport for pay. Professional leagues often set their own licence rules, such as the UEFA Pro Licence for head coaches in top European football leagues. Check with your national sports body and your sport's governing body.

Job outlook

Governments and health organisations encourage people of all ages to be more active, which supports demand for coaches in schools, clubs and community programmes. However, many coaching jobs are part time, seasonal or short term, and full-time roles are limited. In professional sport, job security is low, because coaches may be replaced after poor results. Sports science, data and video analysis are becoming a bigger part of coaching, so coaches who use them well have an advantage.
