Where do they work?

Language teachers work in private language schools, state schools, university language centres, companies and online teaching platforms, and many work as freelance tutors. Teaching English abroad is common, especially in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Europe. Classes often take place in the evenings and at weekends, when adult learners are free. Contracts in private schools are often short, and summer schools provide seasonal work.

How do you become a language teacher?

To teach English or another language in private schools or online, you usually need a strong level in the language and a teaching certificate that includes observed teaching practice, such as CELTA or another reputable TEFL or TESOL course. Many employers and visa rules also require a bachelor's degree in any subject. To teach languages in state schools, you normally need a degree in the language or in education, teacher training and a teaching licence, as for a secondary school teacher. Experienced teachers often take a diploma or master's in language teaching or applied linguistics to progress.

1. Teaching certificate. Short, intensive certificates in teaching English to speakers of other languages, such as CELTA and other TEFL or TESOL courses, are the fastest route into language schools. Choose a course that includes real classroom practice with assessment, because many employers ask for this. A course of around 120 hours or more is a common expectation.
2. Degree and teacher training. A degree in modern languages, linguistics, English or education, followed by teacher training, leads to language teaching in state schools and gives you better long-term options. It also helps with work visas, which often require a degree. In some countries, universities offer specialist programmes in teaching the national language to foreigners.
3. Teaching other languages. If you speak a language such as Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese or Arabic very well, you can train to teach it to learners in other countries. Cultural institutes and universities in many countries offer specialist certificates for teaching their national language, and online platforms let you start with private students.

Do you need a licence to work as a language teacher?

Language teaching is partly regulated. Private language schools, companies and online platforms usually set their own requirements and do not require a licence. Teaching in state schools, however, normally requires a recognised teaching qualification and registration, as for other school teachers. Some countries also control who can teach through their visa rules, for example by requiring a degree or by giving teaching visas only to citizens of countries where the language is widely spoken.

Job outlook

Demand for English remains strong worldwide because of education, business, travel and migration, and interest in languages such as Chinese, Spanish and Arabic continues. Online teaching has opened up global work but has also increased competition, and many online roles are freelance with little job security. AI translation and practice tools may reduce demand for basic lessons, while learners still value teachers for speaking practice, motivation and exam preparation. Teachers with recognised qualifications and a specialism, such as exam preparation or young learners, are better placed.

Questions about becoming a language teacher

Do you need a degree to teach English abroad?

In many countries, yes, because work visas for teachers often require a bachelor's degree in any subject. Some countries, language schools and online platforms accept teachers without a degree, but your choices are more limited and conditions may be worse. A recognised teaching certificate with observed teaching practice is expected almost everywhere.

What is the difference between TEFL, TESOL and CELTA?

TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) and TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) are general names for the field and for many different courses, and their quality varies widely. CELTA is one specific, widely recognised certificate with a fixed standard of assessed teaching practice. Whatever you choose, check the number of hours, the observed teaching practice and whether employers recognise it.

Do you need to be a native speaker to teach English?

No. Many successful English teachers are not native speakers. Employers usually want a very high level of English, often around C1 or C2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), plus a teaching certificate. However, some schools still advertise for native speakers, and some countries give teaching visas only to citizens of certain English-speaking countries.

Can teaching English be a long-term career?

Yes, but it takes planning. Many entry-level jobs are short-term contracts with limited security. Teachers who build a career usually gain a higher qualification, such as a diploma in language teaching or a master's in TESOL or applied linguistics. They then move into senior teaching, teacher training, exam work, materials writing or school management. Teaching in state schools with a teaching licence offers more stability.
