Updated How we use data

Quick answer

Game designers decide how a video game works: its rules, goals, levels, characters, story and the experience players have. They write design documents, build prototypes and test ideas until the game is fun and balanced. Many study game design, computer science or a creative subject, but studios mainly judge applicants by the games and levels they have made. The industry is exciting but competitive and often unstable.

What does a game designer do?

  • Develop game concepts, rules and core gameplay ideas.
  • Design levels, missions, puzzles, characters and in-game systems.
  • Write design documents that explain how features should work.
  • Build prototypes using game engines and simple scripting.
  • Balance difficulty, rewards and in-game economies using playtests and player data.
  • Work closely with programmers, artists, writers and producers.
  • Run playtests and change designs based on player feedback.

Where do they work?

Game designers work in game studios of all sizes, from large companies with hundreds of staff to small independent teams. Others design mobile games, educational games or simulations for training. Studios are concentrated in certain cities and countries, but remote work has become more common. The work involves a lot of meetings and collaboration. Long hours before a game is released, often called crunch, still happen in parts of the industry, and projects can be cancelled.

What skills do you need?

  • Understanding of what makes games fun
  • Game engines and scripting
  • Level, systems or narrative design
  • Prototyping and testing ideas quickly
  • Clear written design documents
  • Basic mathematics and data analysis
  • Teamwork and communication
  • Accepting and using feedback

How do you become a game designer?

Many game designers study game design, computer science, software engineering, digital media or a creative subject such as writing or art. Some studios also hire designers from other backgrounds, such as architecture, psychology or mathematics, if they show strong design thinking. The most important thing is a portfolio of games, levels or mods you have designed, ideally playable, with notes that explain your decisions. Game jams, where teams make a game in a short time, are a common way to build experience. Many designers first join a studio as quality assurance testers or junior designers.

  1. University degree. Degrees in game design, game development, computer science or interactive media teach design theory, programming and team production. Look for programmes where you make complete games in teams, because employers value that experience. Computer science can keep more options open if you later decide to work outside games.
  2. Self-taught with a portfolio. Free and low-cost game engines let you build and publish small games yourself. Many designers learn through online tutorials, modding existing games and taking part in game jams. A portfolio of finished, playable projects can lead to junior jobs, but it takes persistence because studios receive many applications.
  3. Moving from another games role. Some designers start in quality assurance testing, community management, programming or art, and move into design after learning how studios work. This route can take time, but it gives you industry experience and contacts that help when design roles become available.

Do you need a licence to work as a game designer?

Game design is not a regulated profession, and there is no licence to become a game designer. However, games must go through age rating systems in many regions. Designers also need to follow rules on consumer protection and data privacy, and in some countries on features such as loot boxes, where players pay for random rewards. Copyright and other intellectual property rules apply, and studios usually own the work you create for them.

How much does a game designer earn?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish a separate pay estimate that matches this occupation, so we do not show one.

Job outlook

Games are a large global industry, and mobile, independent and online games have created new studios in many countries. However, the industry goes through cycles of rapid hiring and large job cuts, and recent years have seen many studio closures and layoffs. Entry-level design jobs are especially competitive. AI tools are starting to help with content creation and testing. Designers with technical skills, data analysis or a specialism such as systems or level design are in a stronger position.

Questions about becoming a game designer

What degree do you need to be a game designer?

No specific degree is required. Game design, computer science and interactive media degrees are the most common, and art, writing or mathematics can also lead into design. Studios care most about your portfolio of games and levels, so choose a course that gives you plenty of practical team projects.

What is the difference between a game designer and a game developer?

Game designers decide how the game works and feels, including its rules, levels and player experience. Game developer is a broader term that often means the programmers who build the game's code, although it can refer to anyone who makes games. In small studios, one person may design, program and create art.

Do game designers need to know how to code?

Not always, but it helps a lot. Most designers use scripting or visual scripting tools in game engines to build and test ideas. Systems and technical designers need stronger programming skills, while narrative designers focus more on writing. Being able to prototype your own ideas makes your portfolio much stronger.

How do you get a job in the games industry with no experience?

Make small games and finish them, take part in game jams, create levels or mods for existing games, and share your work online. Apply for internships and entry-level roles such as quality assurance testing. Networking at industry events and in online communities is important, because many jobs are filled through contacts.
